Greetings!
Did you know the technique Stampin' Up! is featuring this month is Watercoloring? I love the look of a watercolor image and yet I rarely pull out my supplies to make a card using some form of watercoloring.
Today's card features the emboss resist watercolor technique. This technique is done by heat embossing the stamped image with embossing powder, then using the Water Painters to paint on the ink to fill in the image. The Butterfly Brilliance stamp set is one large stamp consisting of six butterflies in different shapes and sizes, along with a coordinating Brilliant Wings die to cut them out individually. Butterflies come in so many beautiful color combinations that it seemed the perfect subject to use this technique on.
I love how bright and cheery this card is! Painting the butterfly with the bright combination of Poppy Parade and Mango Melody needed a little buffer layer between it and the Parakeet Party background, and the large Stylish Shapes circle die really helps to highlight the butterfly. The fun little circular cluster cutouts is another die in the Brilliant Wings die set and provides a fun peek of the Poppy Parade card base color to show through. I've had this die set for almost two years, and this is the first time I've added the cutouts. It's a fun touch!
Watercoloring is so easy with the Water Painters! They have a handle designed to fill with water so you just give it a little squeeze to get the brush tip wet, dip it into your ink, and you're ready to start painting. Haven't tried them yet? It's a set of 3 with different sized brushes for only $13, so make sure and add them to your cart. You'll love how easy it is to watercolor with these.
I feel butterflies are the best example of transformation so the message I chose reflects that. It's from the Through it Together stamp set, which is loaded with fabulous messages. You'll see another one on the message on the inside. The adorable Fun Flowers Resin Shapes adds the punctuation at the end of the message and is just the right color for this card.

Here's How It's Made:
When stamping a large stamp such as the Butterfly Brilliance stamp I recommend you mount the stamp onto Clear Block H, then lay the stamp rubber side up. Ink the largest butterfly with the Versamark Ink, carefully place the Watercolor Paper onto the stamp, then rub stamp area with a bone folder to get a nice even pressure. Carefully lift the Watercolor Paper from the stamp making sure to hold paper on a corner so you don't smudge the stamped image. Sprinkle with Clear Embossing Powder, shake off excess, and heat set with Heat Tool. The watercolor paper has a somewhat bumpy texture so your image won't come out totally solid, and that's okay.
Place a drop of the Poppy Parade ink on to a clear block, and a drop of Mango Melody ink onto a clear block. (It can be on the same block if it's a larger block). Use the medium Water Painter brush, making sure there is water in the chamber, squeeze to get brush tip wet, dip into Mango Melody ink color and paint butterflies outer wings. Clean brush tip, dip tip into Poppy Parade ink and color in center of butterfly. I got the brush tip very wet to fill in the bottom tips of the wings and the antennae, and blended the two colors together. Use Heat Tool low setting to dry ink on paper. If paper curls, flip it over and heat the back side to flatten it.
Die cut butterfly with large corresponding Brilliant Wings die. Use a couple pieces of sticky note or washi tape to hold the butterfly in place before cutting. Die cut Basic White cardstock with largest circle Stylish Shapes die, and adhere butterfly onto it by applying adhesive at center/body of butterfly only so wings are free.
Die cut the small circle clusters at top left and bottom right of Parakeet Party cardstock, making sure they are spaced so the large die cut circle with butterfly will fit between them. Ink message with Poppy Parade and stamp onto cardstock to left of bottom die cut circle cluster.
Adhere Parakeet Party panel to Poppy Parade card base front. Adhere butterfly circle layers to Parakeet Party panel.
Embellish with Calypso Coral Fun Flower.
Here's what the inside looks like:
Cut a 3-1/2 x 4-3/4 Basic White cardstock panel. Ink message with Parakeet Party and stamp in upper part of panel. Ink the small butterfly in the top corner of the stamp with Poppy Parade and stamp in lower right corner of Basic White panel. Adhere a 1/2 x 1-3/4 piece of Parakeet Party cardstock to the left of the butterfly.
Adhere completed panel to inside of card.
